International Women's Day is celebrated across the world to emphasize the role of women in our society. It was started to honour the efforts of all women who fought for better working conditions, fair wages, and voting rights during the 20th century. It aims to highlight women’s achievements, promote gender equality, and raise awareness of ongoing challenges related to gender discrimination, violence against women, and the gender pay gap.

What is the theme of International Women's Day 2025?

The theme of International Women’s Day 2025 is "Accelerate Action." This theme focuses on enforcing actions that enhance gender equality and empower women worldwide. It aims to draw the attention of global leaders to identify and address ongoing challenges faced by women in the workplace, education, and leadership roles.

Citing World Economic Forum data, International Women's Day (IWD) 2025 highlights the concern that, at the current rate of progress, it will take until 2158 to achieve full gender parity. To speed up progress, IWD 2025 encourages organizations and governments to cooperate at the grassroots level and implement effective action plans promoting equality and inclusion.

By working with impactful organizations and groups worldwide, "Accelerate Action" aims to tackle key issues faced by women. This will help achieve women's economic empowerment and promote diverse talent globally. International Women's Day envisions a world free from biases, stereotypes, and discrimination against women. Hence, each year, on March 8, we celebrate this important occasion.

Who started International Women's Day?

The protest for better working conditions, fair wages, and voting rights during the 20th century led to the first National Women’s Day, observed in the United States in 1909. Later, activist Clara Zetkin proposed the idea of an annual Women's Day at the International Socialist Women’s Conference. This led to the first official International Women’s Day on March 19, 1911, in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. In 1921, the date was changed to March 8th, and today, it has been almost 113 years since its inception.
